Periodontal Disease and its Association with a Greater Risk for Preterm Births and Low Birth Weight Infants in Spain

Preterm births and low birth weight are two problems that have worsened in recent years, despite the fact that prenatal control is ever improving. This can be attributed to the multiple factors involved, and in particular, we can single out the association between levels of gingival health and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Several research studies have shown a clear link between the occurrence of preterm birth and the existence of maternal periodontitis, as well as between low birth weight and some parameters of poor periodontal health. It can be concluded that periodontal diagnosis in pregnant women is essential, as is the treatment of periodontal disease.
