Periodontal diseases are widespread in Spain. Since the last century, it has become evident that there is a relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, although this relationship has its share of contradictions.

First of all, epidemiological data are described for the different types of diabetes. Later, biological models which explain the interrelationship between the two diseases are put forth. Lastly, the most relevant scientific studies on the bidirectional impact that each of the diseases has on one another in regards to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment are mentioned.
