Periodontitis is a set of infectious diseases which result in the progressive destruction of tooth support tissues (periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone). This destruction is accompanied by the formation of pockets between teeth and gums, where bacteria responsible for this process accumulate and form a biofilm.
