Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide; in the year 2008 alone, they caused 36 million deaths. The distribution was as follows: cardiovascular diseases, 48%; cancer, 21%; chronic respiratory diseases, 12% and diabetes, 3%.
