For the first time in Spain, today, May 12, has been declared as European Day of Periodontology, an initiative backed by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) in response to a recommendation by the Spanish Society of Periodontology (SEPA). PERIO·AID® is joining in this effort, whose primary goal is to promote prevention and awareness of the link between periodontal health and overall health.
SEPA is working together with the Spanish Societies for Diabetes, Cardiology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics toward increasing awareness among healthcare professionals in relation to the interaction between gum health and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular risk or pre-term labour.
This initiative also aims to help Oral Healthcare professionals become actively involved in teaching healthy habits, to contribute in the early detection of important diseases and to highlight the importance of collaboration between these professionals and healthcare professionals from all of the other fields for enhanced secondary prevention.
To commemorate this day, a scientific-informative event will be held in the Royal National Academy of Medicine in Madrid, where health professionals from different fields will speak about the various medical disciplines that are most closely associated with periodontal disease.
Professor Dr. David Herrera, Chairman of SEPA, will discuss the conclusions from the EFP/AAP Workshop on Periodontitis and Systemic Diseases. Subsequently, representatives from the above mentioned societies will go on to discuss how periodontal disease affects the risk for systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as pregnancy disorders.
PERIO·AID® welcomes initiatives like these which focus on health promotion, because we are committed to working toward widespread improved Oral Health.
