Periodontal disease is highly prevalent and consists of a series of disease stages of infectious/inflammatory aetiology, with numbers of up to 85% for gingivitis and 35% for periodontitis.
Recent studies confirm the association between periodontal disease and other non-oral diseases, such as heart diseases, diabetes or pre-term births, and research continues to be carried out to determine the mechanisms by which an oral infection may pose a risk for a person’s overall health. Proof of this is the recent Workshop held by the American Association of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology, in which these issues were addressed.
In the article you will be able to find out in detail some of the mechanisms by which periodontitis/peri-implantitis may trigger systemic complications.
