For Dr. Marc Quirynen, the most significant change in recent years within periodontology has been understanding that bacteria are organised in the form of biofilms around teeth and implants, and that this has implications at different levels: aetiology of periodontal disease, antibiotic resistance, clinical protocols, etc.
The latest research in this field is aimed mainly at improving the results of periodontal treatment, including implant therapy and preventing disease recurrence through optimal prevention.
