Ever since they were discovered, antibiotics have been the best weapon used for fighting infections and for treating particular diseases. Nevertheless, excessive exposure over the years has caused us to question its efficacy.
Considering the current problem we face concerning antibiotic resistance, the R&D&I Department at DENTAID is conducting a line of research based on the search for and characterisation of the antibiotic resistance genes in oral bacteria.
The following article, written by Dr. Vanessa Blanc and Dr. Rubén León, experts in oral microbiology and Co-Heads of DENTAID’s R&D&I Department, is a review of the main antibiotics used in dentistry, their mechanisms of action and the primary resistance mechanisms that bacteria have developed to these antibiotics.
